September 20, 2017
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The unprecedented devastation from Hurricane Harvey has created a major hardship on many families in and around the state of Texas. Some of our own UAW members, and their families, who work and live in these areas have been affected. UAW Region 5 Director Gary Jones, whose region encompasses the state of Texas, has been working with the Texas AFL-CIO on relief efforts for UAW members and affiliate member’s needs. Thanks to the generosity from our members here at Local 1069, to date, we have raised $1,500.00 which will be donated to the “Texas Workers Relief Fund.” If any members are still wishing to contribute to this cause please contact Pat Hoffmann or see any of your union representatives.
Once again, we are very dismayed to notify our members that we have been informed by the Company that there will be a surplus effective October 20, 2017. As of today, the number of employees and affected classifications are still not solidified. As we have done with past lay-offs, we will continue to work hard to reduce the number of employees affected, and work with ALL managers to keep our members “in-house.” We will keep you all informed as we move closer to the surplus date and more information is made available to us.
Terry Dittes, our UAW Region 9 Director announced to us the three (3) winners of the 2017 UAW Region 9/Tom Fricano Scholarship. The winners of these scholarships are:
Mya Dawkins, Daughter of Ernestine Dawkins, member of Local 8888 (New Jersey State Winner)
Brandon E. Smith, Son of Phillip E. Smith, member of Local 686 (New York State Winner)
Madison Abriatis, Daughter of Jeff Abriatis, member of Local 3303 (Pennsylvania State Winner)
Congratulations to all the recipients of this year’s scholarship awards. Applications for the 2018 scholarship awards will be available March/April 2018.
Lastly, while I hope everyone enjoyed their summer. Please note that we will start up our monthly membership meetings this coming Sunday, September 24, 2017. Please plan on attending our meeting. Many important issues will be discussed and I am certain many of you have numerous questions and concerns you would like to discuss. We hope to see all members present.
Yours in solidarity,
Mike Tolassi, President
